Concrete work has begun – setting stage for Raising the Roof

Concrete work began earlier this month for the Raise the Roof project.

  1. Concrete was poured above the upper seats (see photo with rebar) to establish the foundation for the press boxes and viewing rooms.
  2. Concrete was also poured below the upper seating area to help relieve the cramped seating in that section of seats.  A row of seats was removed in the upper seating section, which allowed other rows to be moved to create more legroom and comfort.

Our goal is to complete Phase 2 of the Raise the Roof project by having the roof in place for the start of football season. Next steps are:

  1. Do a final pour of concrete and do masonry work in the back of the stadium to complete the support structure of the roof.
  2. We expect the roof contractor to begin installation of the roof in late July or early August.  Installation should take 10 to 14 days.

Phase 3 includes the addition of an ADA compliant walkway from the Waterfall Clinic parking lot which is located above the stadium to the stadium seats.  Target date for Phase 3 is the summer of 2020.

We’d like to thank all of our donors for your generous contributions so far.  We could not have come so far without you!

We’re raising the Roof – Phase 2 begins this week.

Phase 2 – Raising the Roof – begins this week.

Scott Partney Construction will be pouring 30 yards of concrete this week for the settings that will support the roof. The roof should be installed sometime between late June and mid August by our roof contractor Renco General Contractors out of Roseburg.

Special thanks go out to:

  • South Port Lumber (Jason Smith) for donating all of the 2×6’s in the roofing project.
  • Roseburg Lumber Products of Coquille for 6,000 feet of plywood.
  • Knife River Corporation (Chris Peach) for providing the concrete
  • Our Raise the Roof Donors

The total value of Phase 2 is approximately $240,000

Phase 3 – Promenade with ADA accessibility and the 5 guest rooms.

Phase 3 is estimated to cost $45,000 which we will need to fund raise. We’ll be reaching out once again to raise funds for this final phase after the roof starts to go up. The components of Phase 3 are:

  • A promenade that provides ADA accessibility from the Waterfall Community Health Center above the stadium to the stadium .
  • 5 guest rooms for viewing football games and track and field meets. These can be used for donors or other groups.

Again thanks for your support. It will be an exciting summer!

Pirates winter sports finishing strong

The winter term sports season is not quite over and it has been quite the success so far. Both the boys and girls basketball teams will be making a trip to the state tournament this Thursday. The girls were undefeated in district and are ranked number one in state. The boys finished as co-champions in district and are ranked number five.

Our swimmers swept both the boys and girls district championships under the direction of 30 plus years head coach Kathe McNutt. The boys went on to take home a second place trophy at state. The girls brought home a 4th place trophy, with Anna Hutchins winning the state title in the 200 free style.

Our wrestlers won the district championship and sent nine wrestlers to state. The Pirates finished ninth overall at state with three wrestlers picking up individual trophies – two third place trophies and a fifth place trophy.

The Dance team finished the season by bringing home a sixth place trophy. The Cheer team finished 1oth at state while competing against much larger schools. 10th placed placed the cheer team ahead of Bend and south Medford. Go Pirates!

Pirates head to State Semis & Roof Project Gets Much Lower Bid

Pirates return to semifinals this week.

If you are near Cottage Grove this Saturday, November 17th, drop by Cottage Grove High School and watch our #4 ranked Pirates take on #1 Banks.  Game time is 5:30.  Cottage Gove built a new high school a few years ago and the football facility is a wonderful venue.  Marshfield dispatched #13 North Marion 49-16 in the first round of the state playoffs two weeks ago.  Last weekend, the Pirates beat #5 Mazama 28-23.  The Pirates hope to pull off the upset to return to the state championship game the following week.

Good news for Phase 2 of the Raise the Roof project – Raising the roof.

We apologize for the lack of updates to our fund raising campaign.  But as you are probably aware, tariff wars have impacted a lot of prices, especially steel.  We originally thought the roof bids would come in around $200,000.  However, when we went out for bids in 2017, the bids were in the mid to high $300,000 range.  This fall we once again went out for bids and approached more vendors.  Overall, the bids were much lower this year.  A Roseburg company came in with the low bid.  The estimated total which includes setup work including concrete is $235,000.  We feel this is a very workable number and should be able to have a go / no-go decision in December.

Thanks for all of your support.

Phase 3 – ADA access

We are still taking donations for Phase 2 (Raising the Roof) and now, Phase 3. We have already designed the plans for ADA access to the south stands.  Let’s make sure those with disabilities can easily get to the covered seats. Here’s an overhead view of what the stadium would look like with the roof and ADA access.

Class Challenge Update

The teams from Pete Susick’s years have been competing to see who is the best fundraiser.  A recent donation via PayPal from Robert Bestor of $250 moved the class of 1956 up to the #14 spot.

There are several ways to donate – via check, PayPal or credit card.  Go to our Donate Page to learn more.

If you want more information regarding the class challenge, visit our challenge page.

We also have nice Donor Packets that you may be interested in receiving.  Click here to request a donor packet.

Once again, we want to thank all Pirate supporters for your generous contributions!

Boys & Girls Pirates win league basketball titles, Class Challenge & Project Update

It’s been a great season at Pirate Palace as both the boys and girls basketball teams completed perfect records in league (10-0) and advanced to the state playoffs.

The girls are 22-2 on the season and ranked number one in state.  The girls host number sixteen Yamhill-Carlton Friday, March 2nd.    The boys are 18-6 on the season and ranked number three.  They will host number fourteen Baker on Saturday March 3.  Winners advance to the Elite Eight in Forest Grove.  Go Pirates!!

Marshfield continued it’s strong wrestling tradition with a district championship and a runner’s up trophy at state.  Five Pirates were state champs, including Travis “Junior” Wittlake, who won his fourth state title!

With March Madness soon to be complete and spring sports about to start, your mind might not be thinking football thoughts.  But the Raise the Roof Committee has been hard at work.

You may recall that phase 1 was completed last summer – on time and on budget.  Phase 2, the actual installation of the roof, is scheduled for this summer.

The Advertisement for Bids has been issued and sealed bids are due at 2 PM this Thursday, March 1st.  At that time the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud.  Once we know the bid, we will either need to complete fundraising for Phase 2 or start the campaign for Phase 3.

Class Challenge Update

With our fundraising campaign waiting for bids to arrive, it’s time to bring everyone up to date on the Class Challenge for Pete’s years:

  • The Class Challenge chart now includes money raised for items donated at last years successful Raise the Roof auction.
  • The Class of ’54 joined the ‘Purple’ recognition group (more than $2,500 as a class).
  • That makes 7 of Pete’s classes that have surpassed $2,500
  • The Class of 1966 needs just a little bump of $76 to earn the class the ‘Purple’ recognition on the Quarterdeck Wall.  Hit that yellow ‘Donate’ button at the top of the right hand column and get your class into the ‘Purple’ club.
  • We are down to just five of Pete’s classes who have not donated to the Raise the Roof campaign.  1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1979.  Make the first donation for these classes – even if it is just $25.  Get them on the scoreboard.

Let’s Raise the Roof This Summer!

$10,000 Donation from Chris & Alyson Graves

We’ve been quiet on the fundraising front since our successful fall campaign.  Adding to the success of our fundraising campaign was the Pirate football team bringing home a second place state trophy.  That’s a good fall season.  But wait, there’s more.

Now there’s one more shoutout before the year ends.  The shout out goes to Chris and Alyson Graves, classes of ’91 and ’93 for their $10,000 donation.

If you recall, Phase 1 of the Raise the Roof project was paid for and completed during the summer of 2017.  Phase 2, the actual installation of the roof, is scheduled for the summer of 2018.  The Graves donation gets us very, very close to our Phase 2 goal of $150,000.  Thank you, Chris and Alyson.

Class Challenge Update

Most of you know we have a Class Challenge for Pete Susick’s teams.  The Challenge has generated over $72,000 so far.

If you want to add to your class’s total to help your class pass up other classes, click on the gold ‘Donate’ button.  You can donate by credit card, debit card or PayPal when you use the ‘Donate’ button.  If you use the ‘Donate’ button you will immediately get a receipt.  The Booster Club is a 501 (c)(3) organization.  Check with your tax advisor on the deductibility of your donation.

Honoring Norm Hill – Class of ’71, 11-0 Pirates move on to State Championship Game

What better day to honor another Pirate great, Norm Hill, than a day after our Pirates secure our first state championship game appearance since 1994.  The Pirates (11-0) will play last years state runnerup Cottage Grove (11-0) next Saturday at 2:30 at Hillsboro Stadium…..

Today we honor Norm Hill.  Norm was an outstanding three sport athlete.  He was the point guard for the 1971 Pirate squad that reached the state semifinals at Memorial Coliseum.  The following is from his Hall of Fame induction in 2010.

Norm was born in 1953 in Coos Bay. Growing up, much of his time was spent working in his parents (Leon and Norma) restaurant(s); first the North Bend and Coos Bay Dairy Queens and later Leon’s drive-in located at the Y in Empire. Norm graduated from Marshfield in 1971 where he played football, basketball and ran track. Norm attended Linfield College for two years, playing football for the Wildcats. Norm then attended SWOCC for one year and completed his education from Southern Oregon State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Education from Southern Oregon State College (SOSC). Norm also played football for one year at SOSC. Norm returned to Coos Bay in 1977 where he taught business (personal finance), math and coached football and basketball at Marshfield for five years.

Norm Hill receiving his Hall of Fame plaque in 2010.

In 1982, Norm started a financial planning business with his mother, Norma, DBA Hill and Hill Financial Services. Norma retired after twenty one years and it is now Norm Hill Financial Services, LLC which focuses on helping clients develop a total planning process using a cross-disciplinary approach to estate, investment, retirement and business succession planning.

Norm’s commitment in giving back to the community is best served as a member of the Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club for twenty eight years, having served as president and still active as the Secretary/Treasurer. Norm is also a Board Member of Coos Foundation (CF). CF is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to receive and manage money and properties for civic, educational and charitable uses in Coos County. Norm has also served on the Board for the Boys and Girls Club as well as a Board Member and past president of the Marshfield Booster Club.

Norm has three daughters; Angie, Candi and Erica, all graduates from Marshfield. Angie, married to Brian Reiber, has worked for the Boys and Girls Club for 12 years as the Program Director. Brian, her husband, works for Columbia Distributing Company (formerly Thomas & Son’s) the District Manager and has worked for them for the past 14 years. Candi, married to Tony Runn, works with Norm as his assistant and office manager for the past 14 years. Tony, her husband works for Knife River as a foreman and equipment operator for the past 13 years. Erica lives in Hawaii and helps her mom take care of her grandma (Kanui) and also works as the desk clerk for the Seaside Motel in Kona. We have been blessed with a granddaughter, Chloe (Candi & Tony’s daughter), who is 2-1/2 years old (going on 5) and keeps everybody on their toes.

Norm enjoys playing golf, fishing, barbequing and most of all, spending time with family.

10-0 Pirates to play semifinal game in Hillsboro – Class Challenge Passes $72,000

Our Pirates overcame a 13-0 first half deficit and came back to beat La Grande 24-21 at Susick Stadium last Friday night. (The World article)

If you live in the Portland area, head over to Hillsboro stadium this Saturday for a 2:15 kick off against high scoring Ontario in the state semifinals.  The winner heads to the state championship game on November 25.  The Marshfield High School radio station is planning on broadcasting the game.  You can find KMHS here.

The next phase, Phase 2, of our Raise the Roof project is the actual installation of the roof next summer.  We are very close to reaching our Phase 2 fund raising goals.  Please consider donating to our campaign.  It’s been a long time since the Pirates were in the semi-finals.  1999 to be exact.  Let’s reward the students with a roof next summer!

As you can see in the chart to the right, the class of 1966 needs just a little bump of $76 to earn the class the ‘Purple’ recognition on the Quarterdeck Wall.  And the class of 1967 is just $250 from ‘Gold’ recognition.  You can do it!

The class of 1956 continues to climb up the ranks, thanks to a recurring donation from Bill and Gail Whiteman.  Setting up smaller recurring payments might work better for your budget than a larger one time donation.
