Our football team has a bye this week while waiting for the play-in games to be played. Meanwhile, the Pirate volleyball team hosts Cottage Grove Friday night in the first round of the state play-offs. Go Pirates!
The second good news of the weekend is that the Class Challenge has exceeded $60,000 with a big boost by Linda Strine, class of ’65, donating $5000. Linda’s gift is the fourth donation of $5,000 or more by the class of 1965. Linda joins Lou Leberti, Butch Shields, and Cliff George in the $5,000 club. The class of ’65 also has two $1,000 donors and a $500 donor. The total class contribution is well over $20,000.
Robert “Bob” Burles: A 1961 Marshfield graduate, Burles excelled in football, basketball and track for the Pirates, starting in both football and basketball as a sophomore and junior before a serious leg injury the first football game his senior year kept him out of that sport and most of basketball season.
After spending a year at the University of Oregon, he transferred to Willamette University, where he started three years in both football and basketball, earning All-American status in football. He also was an NAIA national champion in the 400-meter hurdles in track and was part of the first group inducted into the university’s hall of fame.
It was an emotional weekend for Kent ‘Coach’ Wigle October 13 and 14 as friends, family and former players honored ‘Coach’ both on the field and at a Saturday night social and auction.
Saturday night festivities included a social and auction at The Mill Casino. The setting gave former players plenty of time to reach out to Kent and his wife Susan during the social hour. Athletic Director, emcee and auctioneer Greg Mulkey introduced the players in a more intimate atmosphere than the night before and several stories were shared with the audience by former players. Mulkey tried valiantly to quickly move on to the auction. However, Mulkey’s efforts were to no avail, as once ‘Coach’ got the mike in his hands, everyone knew there were some good stories coming. Sure enough, the stories got the crowd pumped up. $33,000 later the auction came to a close.
Today we honor Roger Johnson who was inducted into the first class of the Marshfield High School Hall of Fame in 2003 along with other Pirate greats like Mel Counts, Steve Prefontaine, Pete Susick and Fran Worthen.
This morning we announced that we were $350 short of our first major goal of $50,000. Well, shiver me timbers, Ernest and Sandra Manders overflowed the treasure chest with a contribution of $1,000.
We featured Ernie in one of our profiles as
New head coach John Lemmons has our Pirates sailing towards the playoffs with a 5-0 record. The Pirates are averaging 38 points a game while yielding just 11 points a game.
We are hoping that players from the Kent Wigle era will attend the Wigle field dedication this October, Friday the 13th and the auction on Saturday the 14th. Attend one or both activities. The weekend is sure to be a wonderful social event. Be sure to check out
