10-0 Pirates to play semifinal game in Hillsboro – Class Challenge Passes $72,000

Our Pirates overcame a 13-0 first half deficit and came back to beat La Grande 24-21 at Susick Stadium last Friday night. (The World article)

If you live in the Portland area, head over to Hillsboro stadium this Saturday for a 2:15 kick off against high scoring Ontario in the state semifinals.  The winner heads to the state championship game on November 25.  The Marshfield High School radio station is planning on broadcasting the game.  You can find KMHS here.

The next phase, Phase 2, of our Raise the Roof project is the actual installation of the roof next summer.  We are very close to reaching our Phase 2 fund raising goals.  Please consider donating to our campaign.  It’s been a long time since the Pirates were in the semi-finals.  1999 to be exact.  Let’s reward the students with a roof next summer!

As you can see in the chart to the right, the class of 1966 needs just a little bump of $76 to earn the class the ‘Purple’ recognition on the Quarterdeck Wall.  And the class of 1967 is just $250 from ‘Gold’ recognition.  You can do it!

The class of 1956 continues to climb up the ranks, thanks to a recurring donation from Bill and Gail Whiteman.  Setting up smaller recurring payments might work better for your budget than a larger one time donation.

Undefeated Pirates reach quarterfinals – Class Challenge tops $70,000

Phase 1 was paid for and completed last summer. Phase 2 is the Raising or the Roof next summer.

Another weekend of doubly good news for the Pirates.

First – our Pirates defeated Estacada 58-14 in the first round of the state playoffs.  Next up is La Grande at Susick Stadium in a quarterfinal matchup.  La Grande’s quarterback has already signed with Utah State, so expect a tough game.  The World article link.

Secondly – our class challenge for Pete’s classes has passed $70,000!  Unlike other weeks when individual donations of $1,000 to $5,00o accounted for the majority of our increase, the jump to $70,000 in the last week was made up mostly of donations of around $500 or less.  The largest was a contribution of $561 on behalf of the class of 1952 from the class of 1956.

The thoughtfulness by the class of 1956 gave the class of ’52 its’ first donation.  So, we now have had 29 of Pete’s 34 classes make contributions.  If you know of people from the following classes who you think would donate , please contact them and ask them to help continue our Pirate legacy:  47, 48, 49, 79, 80.  Get on the scoreboard, even if it is just $25!

We’d like to remind potential donors of the recognition plaques that will be placed on the Quarterdeck Wall.  For example,  Rick and Debbie Johns $1,000 contribution earns recognition on a 6″ x 6″ plaque on the ‘Gold’ wall.  Bill and Gail Whiteman, class of ’56, have been increasing their donation in $100 increments and are now at the $500 level – good for a 3″ by 6″ plaque on the ‘Gray’ recognition board.  The various levels of recognition can be found here.

Class Challenge Notes:

  • The top 10 stayed the same over the past week.
  • Two classes are very close to moving up to the $5,000 ‘Gold’ recognition level.  1967 needs $250.  1964 needs $900.
  • The class of 1966 needs $76 to get to the ‘Purple’ level.  The class of 1953 needs $300 to go ‘Purple’.
  • List of Pete’s years donors listed by class.  It is fair game to donate $1 more than your classmate.

Help Raise the Roof in 2018 – Phase 2 on track

Our football team has a bye this week while waiting for the play-in games to be played. Meanwhile, the Pirate volleyball team hosts Cottage Grove Friday night in the first round of the state play-offs.  Go Pirates!

The break in football action gives us the opportunity to update everyone on the great success we have had in fundraising and let Pirates know how close we are to having the required cash on hand to Raise the Roof during the summer of 2018.

Phase 2 Goal $150,000. Let’s Raise the Roof Next Summer. Tom Crabtree is still going after 85 yards, he needs a few more blocks.

Phase 1 was completed in August of 2017. Phase 2 is the actual Raising of the Roof. Summer will be here in eight months and we are pleased to announce that we have paid off Phase 1 and are past the 85% mark for Phase 2.

Our cash goal for Phase 2 is $150,000. We currently have $128,000 in cash and pledges, leaving just $22,000 to go.  Donations have been both large and small.  Ranging from $25 to $10,000 to a $20,000 pledge. See our list of donors, including in-kind donors, here.

If you haven’t joined the Raise the Roof campaign as a donor, we would love to add you to the list of 137 donors.  Here are some reason’s to donate:

  • Join the other 137 donors and get recognized on the donor’s list for any amount donated.
  • Get permanent recognition at the stadium on a plaque with a donation of $100 or more.  Click here for the different levels of recognition.
  • Take part in the Class Challenge for Pete’s players.  The class of 1965 has gone crazy with total donations of over $26,000.  Five other classes have donated over $2,500.
  • Donate an amount equal to the year you graduated. Class of ’46? Donate $46.
  • Make the first donation for the following classes in Pete’s class challenge.  1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1952, 1979, 1980 – even if it is just $25.  Get on the scoreboard!
  • Challenge your classmate by matching or passing your classmate(s).  It’s fair game to donate $1 more than your classmate or friend from another class.  Here’s a list of donors year by year for Pete’s classes.
  • Challenge your sibling or join forces with your siblings.  You’ll see donations from families who donated as a team and from siblings who are donating as a competition among siblings – Holtes, Susicks, McNutts, Haliskis and many more
  • In memory of a Pirate or Pirate booster.   Several Pirates have already been  so honored.
  • Your contribution may be tax deductible as the MHS Booster Club is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization.  Consult your tax advisor to determine the deductibility of your support.  If you donate,  you will receive a receipt from the Booster Club.

You can use your credit card or PayPal account. Use the donate button above to give now. After you click on the ‘Donate’ button you will see a page that looks like the image to the right.

Pirates Undefeated in Regular Season – Class Challenge gets another $5000 donation

It was a doubly good weekend for the Pirates.

The first good news is that head coach John Lemmons’ footballers beat the Bulldogs 55-10 to end a 7 game losing streak to the dogs.  The victory completed an undefeated regular season and earned the Pirates an automatic berth in the state playoffs.  The Pirates have a bye next weekend while 16 teams try and play their way into the playoffs.

The second good news of the weekend is that the Class Challenge has exceeded $60,000 with a big boost by Linda Strine, class of ’65, donating $5000.  Linda’s gift is the fourth donation of $5,000 or more by the class of 1965.  Linda joins Lou Leberti, Butch Shields, and Cliff George in the $5,000 club.  The class of ’65 also has two $1,000 donors and a $500 donor.  The total class contribution is well over $20,000.

Strine’s and other recent Pirate donations have pushed us very close to our goal of having at least $125,000 in the bank for Phase 2 of our Raise the Roof Project.  Phase 1 was complete last summer.  Phase 2 is the actual installation of the roof, scheduled for next summer.

Let’s get all Pirates on board

Twenty eight of Pete’s thirty four teams have made contributions.  That leaves six to go.  Four of the classes probably don’t have as much presence on social media as later classes.  If you know of a Pirate from one of these classes you think might donate, please give them a call or visit about our fund raising.  A nice tie in to a class donation is to donate an amount equal to the class year.  For example, a member of the class of 1947 would donate $47.  The classes we would like to come aboard are :

  • 1947
  • 1948
  • 1949
  • 1952
  • 1976
  • 1980

Remembering Bob Burles – Class of ’61

Today we remember Bob Burles.  The following is from his Marshfield Hall of Fame induction in 2005.

Robert “Bob” Burles: A 1961 Marshfield graduate, Burles excelled in football, basketball and track for the Pirates, starting in both football and basketball as a sophomore and junior before a serious leg injury the first football game his senior year kept him out of that sport and most of basketball season.

He was a key part of two Marshfield basketball teams that finished second at state and was rated one of the state’s best prospects his senior year.

Bob Burles, Willamette University.
1964 NAIA T&F: 440 yd Hurdles (4th)
1964 Football
1965 NAIA T&F: 440y Hurdles (2nd)
1965 Football
1966 NAIA T&F: 440y Hurdles (1st)

After spending a year at the University of Oregon, he transferred to Willamette University, where he started three years in both football and basketball, earning All-American status in football. He also was an NAIA national champion in the 400-meter hurdles in track and was part of the first group inducted into the university’s hall of fame.

He went on to a successful career in physical therapy and was a president of the National Physical Therapy Association. Burles died from a brain tumor in 1998.

Pirates name field after Kent Wigle – Social and Auction raises $33,000

It was an emotional weekend for Kent ‘Coach’ Wigle October 13 and 14 as friends, family and former players honored ‘Coach’ both on the field and at a Saturday night social and auction.

Friday night, former Wigle players and friends from the football coaching fraternity met with Wigle in Heritage Hall starting at 5 o’clock.  Later, during halftime of the Marshfield versus Brookings-Harbor game, former players of Wigle, including some from South Umpqua were introduced to a packed north grandstands.   Introductions also included the many coaches who coached with Wigle during his long tenure at the Pirate helm.  The halftime ceremony concluded with the ‘reveal’ of the words ‘Kent Wigle Field’ on a large sign alongside ‘Pete Susick Stadium’ and ‘Prefontaine Track’.

Saturday night festivities included a social and auction at The Mill Casino.  The setting gave former players plenty of time to reach out to Kent and his wife Susan during the social hour.  Athletic Director, emcee and auctioneer Greg Mulkey introduced the players in a more intimate atmosphere than the night before and several stories were shared with the audience by former players.  Mulkey tried valiantly to quickly move on to the auction. However, Mulkey’s efforts were to no avail, as once ‘Coach’ got the mike in his hands, everyone knew there were some good stories coming.  Sure enough, the stories got the crowd pumped up.  $33,000 later the auction came to a close.

With the auction being a success, phase 2 of our Raise the Roof project is on track.  Phase 2 is the roof installation which is scheduled for the summer of 2018.  The roof installation budget is $125,000 plus in kind donations.  We currently have $116,000 in cash.  So we are almost 93% of the way to our cash goal for phase 2.

Thanks for your support!

Remembering Roger Johnson – Class of 1957

Today we honor Roger Johnson who was inducted into the first class of the Marshfield High School Hall of Fame in 2003 along with other Pirate greats like Mel Counts, Steve Prefontaine, Pete Susick and Fran Worthen.

The following was written at the time of his induction into the Marshfield Hall of Fame in 2010.

_______________________

Johnson was a high school all-American in football for Marshfield and went on to play for Oregon State University and in the Canadian Football League.

He graduated from Marshfield in 1957, playing on three state champion teams, and graduated from Oregon State in 1961, where he was an honorable mention all-American.

He was drafted by the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos and played three years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders before going into private business. He owns a restaurant in Portland and lives in Oregon City.

Roger also was an all-state tournament basketball player in 1956 & 1957 as well as excelling on the track.  Roger passed away on February 28, 2013.

Class Challenge Explodes past $50,000 with Ernie & Sandra Manders contribution

This morning we announced that we were $350 short of our first major goal of $50,000.  Well, shiver me timbers, Ernest and Sandra Manders overflowed the treasure chest with a contribution of $1,000.

Both Ernie and Sandra are class of 1963 grads, so their donation catapults the ’63 Pirates all the way from number 16 in the class challenge to number 10.

We featured Ernie in one of our profiles as Dr. Ernest Manders.  So, it was time to pull out the ol’ 1963 Mahiscan to see what we could find on Sandra.  Thank you for your donation and have a great time at your 55th reunion next year.

Pirates 5-0 to start season. Class Challenge very close to $50,000

New head coach John Lemmons has our Pirates sailing towards the playoffs with a 5-0 record.  The Pirates are averaging 38 points a game while yielding just 11 points a game.

Pirate alumni have been just as successful.  Our most recent large cash contribution was $500 from Bill Ferguson, class of 1954.  The gift propelled Bill’s class into the top 10.

  • Pete’s classes have given $49,646 to date.  Not bad for less than a half a years effort.  Please consider making a contribution by hitting that ‘Donate’ button.  It won’t take much to reach $50,000.
  • While the Class Challenge has been focusing on Pete’s teams, other years will not be left adrift.  We are hoping that players from the Kent Wigle era will attend the Wigle field dedication this October, Friday the 13th and the auction on Saturday the 14th.  Attend one or both activities.  The weekend is sure to be a wonderful social event.  Be sure to check out this link for more Wigle Weekend information.
  • Here’s a great idea from Bill Whiteman & Gail Holte Whiteman (’56).  The Whiteman’s have pledged $1,000 over time.  They will be making periodic $100 contributions until they reach their goal.  That is a good way to plan.  Periodic contributions towards a personal goal allow Pirates to time their donations around other expenses.

The Raise the Roof Committee would like to thank all of you Pirates who have made our campaign a success so far.  We have raised well over $100,000 in cash and in-kind donations.  With Phase 1 complete, we will enter Phase 2.  Phase 2 will culminate with the raising of the roof.  Our goal is to raise the roof in time for the 2018 football season.
