Listen to Pete

I had the great privilege to interview Pete late in his life. Present at the interview were Pete’s wife Marcella  and Jesse Moore. As far back as my playing days, the late 60’s, I loved the pace at which Pete spoke, his occasional use of a foreign language – ath-uh-lete, and the smooth way that what used to be called a curse word rolled off his lips.

To those of us who played for Pete, hearing his voice will remind us of Pete, the WWII vet, who was wounded in Okinawa and somehow landed on our side of Coos Bay.   A man who then motivated us to perform accomplishments we probably didn’t think we had in us.

Please listen to the audio. We hope you will feel the resurgence of Pirate Pride and consider donating to the Raise the Roof for Pete campaign.

PS.  There are long pauses in the interviews for Pete, Marcella and I  to grab more coffee or for me to take notes.  So don’t stop listening when you hear a pause.

Wayne Frostad racks up the yards

This one is on everyone’s all time favorites list. I’ve heard a lot of players talk about Wayne Frostad’s infamous penalty spree, but Pete told it best. Keep in mind that Frostad racks up 45 yards in penalties in one series, which sets up another Frostad story which follows this 3 minute clip.  Frostad was a 6′ 1″, 190 pound tackle who played on the Oregon All Star Team in 1951.

Frostad gets to run 45 laps for racking up his penalty yards

So, Wayne piled up the penalties in one series on the field. Listen to this hysterical punishment as told by Pete.

The Ashland Sock Story.

Another classic.  If you have your own version, please let us know.  5 minutes

Pete tells of the ‘little fat kid’, Barney Holland, who ends up in the University of Oregon (and MHS) Hall of Fame.

(We didn’t talk about the donut story.  We didn’t talk about it because we were all there when it happened, but you can hear us chuckling about it.)

Coaches lining up against MHS players and the Dean Sheldon-Chet Haliski combat story on the Harding School lawn.  Plus the Chet the Jet catching the smokers in the hedge.

Another classic.  There are many versions of this story.  This one is told by Pete and Jesse Moore.  Notes: When you hear ‘Your dad’, that’s Chet Haliski.   Sheldon is Dean Sheldon.  Koreiva is the great coach Tony Koreiva.   Keep in mind that Chet Haliski and Dean Sheldon were WWII vets, as was Pete.  They were big and super strong.  Haliski was a hand-to-hand bayonet and knife / judo instructor in the war.  So when they line up to face one another……….
The smokers story occurs in what was a huge hedge on a residence across from the Harding building.

Pete talks about the house he was born in, his appreciation of the opportunities playing at North Bend gave him, his college football choices, and playing 3 sports for Vic Adams at North Bend and more .  6 minutes.

How big was the Marshfield – North Bend Rivalry when Pete was in high school . 30 seconds
